But the Beach*

I would like to write a poem about the beach like it's just any other place.
But it seems impossible, unjustifiable.
Whatever I look at, whatever I hear or feel seems blissful.
Cloudy swirls in the slowly drifting brackish estuary,
flanking the aquabatics of the jumping silver fish creating his own rippling three ring spotlight.
As for the shoreline, forget it.
Broken pieces of pearlescent shells bejeweling the Gulf Coast sand,
hosting an organized scatter of ruddy turnstones pecking for a late morning snack.
A slick dome shaped shell, freckled in fine point black specks and tiny little fissures.
I tried to walk away, but of course the Gulf.
The innumerable hues of greens and blues in a perfect water color blend drew me in further.
My feet gently sunk into the silky wet sand as the salty water washed and cleansed me, setting my feet in deeper.
The foam where the water meets the sand, bathing the coast in champagne -like bubbles in celebration of all its glory.
So I tried to shut my eyes, but of course the beach.
I could hear the pushing and pulling of the tide and the gush of the flowing sea.
I heard the sound of the coastal breezes whirring around my ears and through my hair and the trees.
They seem to sing to me in prayer, giving me a message, a meaning, or saying nothing at all.
So special is the beach, who knows maybe it is sacred.
So special is the beach, who knows, maybe the sky above it is sacred too.
And the silver fish, and the mollusks and the ruddy turnstones,
and the sand and the sea, and me.
We are one and the same.
Sacred yet ordinary.

*This poem was written following a series of writing exercises at the 2nd Annual Women's Writing Retreat at Lover's Key. I used Mary Oliver's poem This World.

A Peaceful Day at the Beach

A lazy, hazy afternoon on Lover's Key Beach, I didn't even make it down to the water until about 3:00 pm. It was the first time I roamed around down the beach by myself, with no schedule and no time commitments for the remainder of the day. I got in and out of my car several times, stopping to look at whatever I wanted, whenever I felt like it. It was a lovely afternoon. I only wish I would have stopped at the Fish House for a bite, but I got distracted as I passed it and didn't feel like turning back.

Bridge
Up on the bridge, back to the highway
drop a line, and the fish come my way.

Don't they know?
Passersby rush along in their cars, a vacation right outside their windows
Gentle tide washing ashore, bathing shell pieces and toes.
Blustery breezes cleanse skin, and hair, and soul.
Do they have any idea what they're missing?

Tortoise
Don't mind me
Just having a snack
Enjoy the beach
I'll be here when you get back

Grass
Seagulls soar above
Florida's natural beach
windblown wispy grass

Looking to Lovers Key

Our 2nd Annual Women's Writing retreat is less than three months away, and I am starting to get excited. I've been gathering ideas, scheduled a planning day with a colleague, and I've been looking back through my journal and photos from last year. I bought a new journal to take with me that weekend, and on the first page is where I set my intention for the two days of writing. On the following pages, I wrote thoughts and pieces of writing throughout the weekend. The entire experience was a catalyst for my writing during the summer and early fall.  Tonight I flipped through the pages, and about a third of the way through, there were two pages dated September 13th. In between was an undated page which was likely written that same day. I believe it was in response to a field trip I took with my college students down to Lovers Key Beach. I wrote down some words and phrases used by the student naturalist as we walked the beach. It appears I started to write a poem, so tonight in anticipation of the retreat down on Lovers Key, I decided to finish it.

Lovers Key
Not just for lovers of one another
a secluded piece of beautiful Southwest Florida
nestled estuaries, nurseries for sea creatures
safe haven for birds and beachgoers

Kayak through the mangroves
lick brackish splashes from your upper lip
Lovers of nature come here for respite
to relax, rejuvenate
rejoice in the wildlife and vegetation

Enjoy gulf breezes and blue skies
see an anhinga dive down in pursuit of lunch
the great blue heron soar above
snowy white egrets tiptoe along the shore
and tiny boats sail out in the distance

Sit by the water's edge and sip on a cocktail
close your eyes and tilt your face up
in praise of the sun's warmth and light
let the energy move you to create
sacred souls in writing communion
